Using YOLO Mode in Cursor for Rapid Iteration

Cursor YOLO Mode

YOLO Mode (You Only Live Once) in Cursor automatically accepts all AI-generated diffs and changes without requiring manual approval for each one. This dramatically speeds up repetitive tasks and trusted workflows, but comes with risks. This guide covers how to use YOLO Mode safely and effectively.

What is YOLO Mode?

YOLO Mode enables:

  • Automatic diff acceptance - AI changes are applied immediately
  • Faster iteration - No clicking "Accept" for every change
  • Batch operations - Apply multiple changes in sequence
  • Reduced friction - Stay in flow state longer

When to Use YOLO Mode

Good Use Cases

ScenarioWhy YOLO Works
Adding JSDoc commentsLow risk, predictable
Renaming variablesEasy to verify with search
Formatting codeSafe, reversible
Adding typesCompiler catches errors
Refactoring importsIDE highlights issues
Writing testsTest runner validates
Updating config filesUsually straightforward

Avoid YOLO For

ScenarioRisk Level
Authentication changesCritical
Database migrationsCritical
Payment processingCritical
API contract changesHigh
Large architectural changesHigh
Production deploymentsCritical
Deleting filesHigh

Enabling YOLO Mode

Method 1: Settings

{
"cursor.yoloMode": true,
"cursor.autoAcceptDiffs": true,
"cursor.autoApplyChanges": true
}

Method 2: Command Palette

  1. Press Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + P
  2. Type "YOLO Mode"
  3. Select Toggle YOLO Mode

Method 3: Chat Command

/yolo

Or:

Enable YOLO mode for this session

Method 4: Keyboard Shortcut

// keybindings.json
{
"key": "cmd+shift+y",
"command": "cursor.toggleYoloMode"
}

YOLO Mode Configuration

Safe YOLO Settings

{
"cursor.yoloMode": true,
"cursor.autoAcceptDiffs": true,

// Safety limits
"cursor.yolo.maxFilesPerSession": 20,
"cursor.yolo.maxLinesChanged": 500,
"cursor.yolo.requireTestsPass": true,
"cursor.yolo.excludePatterns": [
"src/auth/**",
"src/payment/**",
"src/database/migrations/**",
"**/*.env*",
"config/production/**"
],

// Auto-save settings
"cursor.yolo.autoSaveBeforeApply": true,
"cursor.yolo.createGitCheckpoint": true
}

Per-Project YOLO

Create .cursor/yolo-config.json:

{
"enabled": true,
"safePatterns": [
"src/components/**/*.tsx",
"src/hooks/**/*.ts",
"src/utils/**/*.ts",
"tests/**/*.ts"
],
"unsafePatterns": [
"src/auth/**",
"src/api/**",
"src/database/**"
],
"maxChangesPerFile": 50,
"requireReviewFor": [
"*.config.*",
"*.env*",
"Dockerfile"
]
}

Safe YOLO Workflows

Workflow 1: Documentation Sprint

[YOLO ON] Add JSDoc comments to all functions in src/utils/
Follow the existing style from src/utils/helpers.ts

Expected: 15-20 files modified, all comments added Verification: Spot-check a few files

Workflow 2: TypeScript Migration

[YOLO ON] Add TypeScript types to src/components/
Use the interfaces from src/types/
Keep existing runtime behavior

Expected: Types added, no logic changes Verification: Run tsc --noEmit

Workflow 3: Test Generation

[YOLO ON] Write unit tests for src/services/user.ts
Follow the pattern in tests/services/auth.test.ts
Cover all public methods

Expected: New test file created Verification: Run tests with npm test

Workflow 4: Import Cleanup

[YOLO ON] Organize imports in src/pages/
Group: React, external libs, internal, types
Remove unused imports

Expected: Clean imports, no functional changes Verification: App still builds

Safety Measures

1. Git Checkpoints

Always create a checkpoint before YOLO:

# Create YOLO checkpoint branch
git checkout -b yolo/task-name

# Commit current state
git add -A && git commit -m "checkpoint: before YOLO session"

2. Review After YOLO

After YOLO session:

# Review all changes
git diff

# Check files changed
git diff --stat

# Run tests
npm test

# If anything is wrong, revert
git checkout -- .

3. YOLO with Tests

Configure to only YOLO if tests pass:

{
"cursor.yolo.requireTestsPass": true,
"cursor.yolo.testCommand": "npm test",
"cursor.yolo.stopOnTestFailure": true
}

4. File Size Limits

{
"cursor.yolo.maxFileSizeKB": 100,
"cursor.yolo.maxFilesPerChange": 10,
"cursor.yolo.maxLinesPerFile": 200
}

YOLO Mode Commands

Chat Commands

CommandAction
/yolo onEnable YOLO mode
/yolo offDisable YOLO mode
/yolo statusCheck YOLO status
/yolo safeYOLO only for safe patterns
/yolo fullFull YOLO (all files)

Session Commands

[yolo on] Add error handling to all API endpoints
[yolo safe] Refactor component props to use interfaces
[yolo off] Wait, let me review that last change first

Measuring YOLO Effectiveness

Track these metrics:

MetricWithout YOLOWith YOLO
Time per task15-30 min5-10 min
Clicks per change3-50
Context switchesHighLow
Error rateLowSlightly higher
Revert rateLow5-10%

Team YOLO Guidelines

When the Team Should Use YOLO

  • Code style updates
  • Documentation improvements
  • Adding types
  • Refactoring internal utilities
  • Writing tests

When YOLO is Forbidden

  • Production hotfixes
  • Security-related changes
  • Database schema changes
  • API version changes
  • Configuration changes

PR Template for YOLO Changes
