Fixing Cursor Network, VPN, and Region Restriction Issues

Cursor Network Fix

Network issues are among the most frustrating problems when using Cursor. Connection failures, VPN incompatibility, HTTP/2 errors, and regional restrictions can all prevent you from accessing AI features. This guide provides comprehensive solutions for all common network problems.

Common Network Issues

1. "Connection Failed" Error

Symptom: Cursor shows "Connection failed. If the problem persists, please check your internet connection or VPN."

Causes:

  • Firewall blocking Cursor
  • Proxy misconfiguration
  • DNS resolution failure
  • Network timeout

2. VPN Compatibility

Symptom: Cursor works without VPN but fails when VPN is active (or vice versa).

Causes:

  • VPN routing rules
  • Split tunneling issues
  • DNS leaks
  • MTU mismatches

3. HTTP/2 Errors

Symptom: "HTTP/2 stream error" or connection reset errors.

Causes:

  • Incompatible proxy settings
  • Network equipment (routers, firewalls)
  • Outdated TLS versions

4. Region Restrictions

Symptom: "This model provider doesn't serve your region."

Causes:

  • Geographic blocking by AI providers
  • Compliance restrictions
  • IP-based region detection

Solution 1: Basic Network Diagnostics

Check Internet Connection

# Test basic connectivity
ping -c 3 google.com

# Test Cursor-specific endpoints
curl -I https://cursor.com
curl -I https://api.cursor.sh

# Check DNS resolution
nslookup cursor.com

Test with curl

# Test Cursor API connectivity
curl -v https://api.cursor.sh/health

# Test with different protocols
curl --http1.1 -I https://api.cursor.sh
curl --http2 -I https://api.cursor.sh

Check Firewall

# macOS - check application firewall
sudo /usr/libexec/ApplicationFirewall/socketfilterfw --getglobalstate

# Windows - check Windows Defender
test-netconnection -computername cursor.com -port 443

# Linux - check UFW
sudo ufw status

Solution 2: Proxy Configuration

Configure System Proxy

macOS:

# Check current proxy settings
networksetup -getwebproxy Wi-Fi
networksetup -getsecurewebproxy Wi-Fi

# Set proxy (if needed)
networksetup -setwebproxy Wi-Fi proxy.company.com 8080
networksetup -setsecurewebproxy Wi-Fi proxy.company.com 8080

# Bypass for Cursor
networksetup -setproxybypassdomains Wi-Fi "cursor.com,api.cursor.sh"

Windows:

# Check proxy settings
netsh winhttp show proxy

# Set proxy
netsh winhttp set proxy proxy.company.com:8080 "<local>;cursor.com"

Linux:

# Set HTTP proxy
export HTTP_PROXY=http://proxy.company.com:8080
export HTTPS_PROXY=http://proxy.company.com:8080

# Set no-proxy
export NO_PROXY="localhost,127.0.0.1,cursor.com,api.cursor.sh"

Configure Cursor-Specific Proxy

In Cursor Settings (settings.json):

{
"http.proxy": "http://proxy.company.com:8080",
"http.proxyStrictSSL": false,
"http.proxySupport": "override",
"github-enterprise.uri": "https://github.company.com"
}

Solution 3: VPN Fixes

Split Tunneling

Configure your VPN to exclude Cursor traffic:

Common VPN Apps:

  • NordVPN: Settings > Split Tunneling > Add Application > Cursor
  • ExpressVPN: Options > Split Tunneling > Manage > Add Cursor
  • OpenVPN: Add route exceptions in config

Route Exceptions

# macOS/Linux - add route exceptions
sudo route add -net api.cursor.sh -gateway 192.168.1.1

# Or using ip command
sudo ip route add api.cursor.sh via 192.168.1.1

DNS Configuration

# Use public DNS instead of VPN DNS
# macOS
networksetup -setdnsservers Wi-Fi 8.8.8.8 1.1.1.1

# Linux
sudo systemd-resolve --interface=eth0 --set-dns=8.8.8.8

# Windows
netsh interface ip set dns "Wi-Fi" static 8.8.8.8

Test Without VPN

# Temporarily disconnect VPN and test
curl -I https://api.cursor.sh

# If it works without VPN, the issue is VPN routing

Solution 4: HTTP/2 Fix

Disable HTTP/2 in Cursor

// settings.json
{
"cursor.ai.disableHttp2": true,
"http.http2": false
}

Force HTTP/1.1

# Test with HTTP/1.1
curl --http1.1 -v https://api.cursor.sh

# If this works, configure Cursor to use HTTP/1.1

Update TLS Version

# Check TLS version
openssl s_client -connect api.cursor.sh:443 -tls1_3

# If TLS 1.3 fails, test with 1.2
openssl s_client -connect api.cursor.sh:443 -tls1_2

Solution 5: Region Restriction Bypass

Understand the Block

Cursor uses AI models from different providers:

  • OpenAI (GPT-4, GPT-4o)
  • Anthropic (Claude)
  • Google (Gemini)

Each provider has different region availability.

Check Model Availability

# Test specific provider endpoints
curl -I https://api.openai.com/v1/models
curl -I https://api.anthropic.com/v1/messages
curl -I https://generativelanguage.googleapis.com

Use a Different Model

If one model is region-blocked, switch to another:

  1. Open Cursor Settings
  2. Go to "AI Features" or "Models"
  3. Switch to an available model:
    • Claude not available? Try GPT-4o
    • GPT-4 not available? Try Gemini

Configure Custom API Endpoint

If you have access through another provider:

{
"cursor.ai.customEndpoint": "https://your-proxy.example.com",
"cursor.ai.customApiKey": "your-api-key"
}

Solution 6: Cursor-Specific Settings

Increase Timeout

// settings.json
{
"cursor.ai.requestTimeout": 120000,
"cursor.ai.connectionTimeout": 30000
}

Disable Auto-Proxy Detection

{
"http.proxySupport": "off"
}

Enable Debug Logging

{
"cursor.ai.debug": true,
"cursor.ai.logLevel": "verbose"
}

Clear Cache

# macOS
rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/Cursor/Cache
rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/Cursor/CachedData

# Windows
# Delete %APPDATA%\Cursor\Cache
# Delete %APPDATA%\Cursor\CachedData

# Linux
rm -rf ~/.config/Cursor/Cache
rm -rf ~/.config/Cursor/CachedData

Solution 7: Corporate Network

Corporate Proxy Authentication

{
"http.proxy": "http://username:[email protected]:8080",
"http.proxyAuthorization": null,
"http.proxyStrictSSL": false
}

SSL Certificate Issues

# Export corporate CA certificate
openssl s_client -connect api.cursor.sh:443 -showcerts </dev/null 2>/dev/null > corporate-ca.crt

# Add to system trust store
# macOS
sudo security add-trusted-cert -d -r trustRoot -k /Library/Keychains/System.keychain corporate-ca.crt

# Windows (PowerShell as Admin)
Import-Certificate -FilePath corporate-ca.crt -CertStoreLocation Cert:\LocalMachine\Root

Firewall Whitelist

Ask your IT team to whitelist:

cursor.com
*.cursor.com
api.cursor.sh
*.cursor.sh
openai.com
*.openai.com
anthropic.com
*.anthropic.com
googleapis.com
*.googleapis.com

Solution 8: Advanced Diagnostics

Full Network Trace

# macOS
sudo tcpdump -i any -w cursor-traffic.pcap host api.cursor.sh

# Test while capturing
# Then analyze with Wireshark

Check TLS Handshake

# Detailed TLS debug
openssl s_client -connect api.cursor.sh:443 -debug -state

# Check certificate chain
openssl s_client -connect api.cursor.sh:443 2>/dev/null | openssl x509 -noout -text

Test with Different Networks

  1. Mobile hotspot - bypass corporate network
  2. Different WiFi - test router-specific issues
  3. Ethernet vs WiFi - test adapter issues
  4. Different DNS - test DNS resolution

Quick Fix Checklist

  • Check internet connection with ping google.com
  • Test Cursor endpoints with curl -I https://api.cursor.sh
  • Check if VPN is active
  • Verify proxy settings
  • Try without VPN/proxy
  • Clear Cursor cache
  • Restart Cursor
  • Try a different AI model
  • Check firewall settings
  • Test on a different network
